In a major relief for Greater Noida West residents, the Noida Metro Rail Corporation (NMRC) is likely to receive approval from the Public Investment Board (PIB) for the Aqua Line extension project on July 22. This first operational leg, running from Sector 51 (via Sector 61) to Kisan Chowk, is the opening chapter of a much larger story that has been years in the making. The immediate stretch under approval is compact but consequential. Noida Metro Rail Corporation is planning a 7.5-km extension of the Aqua Line — from Sector 51, Noida to Kisan Chowk (Sector 4, Greater Noida West), with five new Metro stations connecting over 5 lakh residents of Greater Noida West societies who currently have no Metro access, at a cost of Rs 1,500 crore. The five stations on the new Aqua Line extension are Sector 61, Sector 70, Sector 122, Sector 123, and Greater Noida Sector 4 (Kisan Chowk). The project will be jointly funded by the Central Government, the Uttar Pradesh Government, and the Noida and Greater Noida authorities. This 7.5-km leg, however, is only the first phase of a far larger ambition. The revised DPR prepared by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation envisions a 17.43 km extension of the Aqua Line from Sector 51 Station to Knowledge Park V via 11 new stations. The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has already approved the detailed project report for this expansion of the Aqua Line metro in Noida and Greater Noida. The full corridor is designed to stitch together some of the fastest-growing residential belts on the Noida-Greater Noida border with the institutional hub of Knowledge Park V. One of the most talked-about features of the extended line is its interchange design. A proper interchange facility is proposed to be built with the Delhi Metro's Blue Line at Sector 61 Station. Currently, commuters travelling between the two networks must change trains at Sector 51 and often walk a fair distance to reach the Blue Line's Sector 52 station — a friction point that has long frustrated daily riders. A cornerstone of this extension is the proposed interchange station at Noida Sector-61, which will connect the NMRC Aqua Line directly to the DMRC Blue Line, eliminating the previous bottleneck at Sector 51 where commuters had to change trains and often walk long distances. Timelines matter to homebuyers weighing possession dates against infrastructure delivery, and NMRC has been fairly specific here. NMRC MD Krishna Karunesh confirmed that because NMRC is a Central Government undertaking under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, construction will begin after PIB approval and take approximately two years to complete, meaning Greater Noida West residents can expect Metro access by 2028–2029. That window aligns closely with possession schedules for several residential projects currently under construction along this stretch. The bigger prize for the region is the eventual multimodal loop this corridor unlocks. The line runs separately from the RRTS but will connect to the proposed Ghaziabad-Jewar Airport RRTS corridor, allowing residents to reach Jewar Airport via Metro to Kisan Chowk and then RRTS — creating India's first end-to-end public transport route from a major residential township directly to an international airport. For a catchment that has historically been dismissed as "metro-isolated," this changes the connectivity math entirely — linking daily commuters to Delhi's Blue Line on one end and to Noida International Airport on the other. The timing of this infrastructure push has not gone unnoticed by developers eyeing expansion beyond their traditional strongholds. Signature Global, long associated with Gurugram's affordable and mid-income housing segment, has publicly flagged interest in this very corridor. Founder and Chairman Pradeep Aggarwal has said the company wants to expand its business in Delhi-NCR beyond the Gurugram market and is looking for land parcels in Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway. A metro line that halves commute friction to Delhi and shortens the road to the upcoming international airport is precisely the kind of catalyst that makes such expansion plans commercially attractive.
